Cast of the First We’re Funny That Way Festival 1997
Started in 1997, the We’re Funny That Way Festival was the first comedy festival of its kind – the first to provide a stage for LGBTQ2S+ talent and raise money for the queer community.
It was an experience like no other, providing a safe space for queer performers to showcase their great talent. It was as safe space for audiences to be at home and feel themselves and it was an inspiring space with all of the money going back to where it was needed: The queer community!
Over the course of 25 years, the We’re Funny That Way Festival has made hundreds of thousands of dollars in transformational grants to grassroots queer organizations with an eye to smaller towns and cities across Canada.

In addition to making GRANTS, presenting queer talent, and creating great audience experiences, we’ve won awards! In 2021 we produced a We’re Funny That Way virtual pride special for CBC, Executive Producing along side our friends and supporters at Project10 Productions (Shitt’s Creek, Kids in the Hall), and guess what – we got nominated for FOUR – that’s right FOUR Canadian Screen Awards! Best host, Best Writing Variety or Sketch Comedy, Best Performance, Sketch Comedy (Individual or Ensemble), and Best Performing Arts Special – for which we won the Canadian Screen Award!
